Solving real problems in real communities for real residents, and those who serve them, in real time. The Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living (GCISL) is housed in the School of Hospitality Business Management (SHBM) in the Carson College of Business at Washington State University. Educating the next generation of seniors housing leaders, conducting relevant data-driven research, and collaborating with industry partners, trade associations, and vendors to better serve an aging population, the GCISL was the first program of its kind. Due to its social and care model, senior living is a natural extension of the hospitality industry with many parallels and transferable skills. Founding industry partners placed high value on the program being in a business school. Students take all the core business requirements (accounting, finance, information systems, management, marketing, decision sciences), several hospitality requirements, three courses specific to senior living, and choices in the general university core to round out knowledge relevant to aging. Experiential learning and required industry experience prepare students for positions in community operations. An online, on demand, non-credit professional development certificate program is also available. Most modules were developed by industry experts and the content aligns with the Argentum CDAL credentialing exam.
